Serena Williams, one of the best tennis players in the world, has recently retired after playing at her last US Open match.

Williams announced her retirement via an Instagram post, saying, “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction.”

Williams left a remarkable legacy behind, winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles (the most number of titles anyone has won), 25 Guinness World Records, and many more astounding achievements. Additionally, Williams has advocated for gender equality, both on and off the court, throughout her whole career.

Williams’ work has had a tremendous influence on women athletes all over the world, encouraging them to change people’s expectations and to not conform to societal expectations. Women athletes have been regarded more seriously the past couple years, which can be partly attributed to Williams’ efforts.

In multiple interviews, she has expressed that, after retiring, she will be focusing on growing her family, expanding her business ventures, and enjoying life off the court.
